The "Wee" Grand Match
Eleven teams competed at Table Top Curling for the Let Us Shine Trophy at the
Stewartfield Farm and raised £150 for the Let Us Shine charity.Starting with
a two league format four teams won through to the semi finals where the league
winners lined up against the runners up from the other league. This pitted John
Cardno and David Brown from East Kilbride Club, surprise winners of Division A,
against Raymond Lyon and John Strang from Kittoch Club.
However the experience of octogenarian curler, John Strang was too much for the
relative novices from East Kilbride and Kittoch ran out 7 - 1 winners.
The second semi final involved the second Kittoch team of Brian Adams and Ron
James who took on the winners of Division B, David Paul and George Alston of
Rutherglen Club. On this occasion the Kittoch representatives were unsuccessful,
going down 4 - 1.
The Final proved a much closer affair but despite getting both teams through to the semi finals Kittoch were ultimately unsuccessful against the experienced Rutherglen pairing, who won 4 - 3.
The Trophy, a hand carved Ghanaian statue, donated by Let Us Shine founder, Fiona Marra, was presented by her to worthy winners David Paul and George Alslton at the end of the evening, together with deluxe whisky - the "spirit" of curling.
Rutherglen Club made it a double when President Bill McIntosh won the putting competition with a remarkable 100% score, and was presented with a bottle of wine by Fiona.
Thanks to Rutherglen, Kittoch, Glasgow and Bothwell & Uddingston Clubs who supported East Kilbride members and their friends. Good fellowship, a free pie and pint were enjoyed by all, and as a result it is intended to make this an annual event.
